Utilize Supply Chain Modeling to Answer the Question “Where Do We Go from Here?”
March 27, 2025 By: Michael L. Davis | Topics: Network Strategy
Whether you have a single distribution facility or multiple facilities in your network, supply chain rationalization and modeling provide significant insight and identify opportunities to optimize your supply chain and customer service.
Today’s robust modeling software can process the large data files required to develop a baseline, down to the SKU-level, and then run the numerous “what if” options to understand how various decisions can significantly impact your supply chain.
While many organizations may believe that supply chain modeling should be done every 5 years, today’s geopolitical environment demands a model that can be updated as often as significant events require.
Sedlak has extensive supply chain strategic analysis and planning experience. We use state of the art tools and methods for network design and bring unique, creative alternatives that challenge the status quo. Our scenario analyses and recommendations are based on our end-to-end supply chain experience. Our focus is on strategy, results, and the business case to execute.
Recent network optimization and strategy projects include the following:
- Sedlak has partnered with a leading manufacturer and distributor of plumbing products transitioning to a single DC network model. Sedlak analyzed the current distribution network operations and identified potential areas for improvement and optimization. This included determining the cost-benefit analysis to continuing distribution operations with a 3PL vs. bringing distribution back in-house. Sedlak also assessed potential technologies and strategies to enhance efficiency and develop a long-term strategy for network growth and sustainability.
- A home improvement company focused on bath hardware products was experiencing robust growth in both retail and ecommerce volume. However, the growth was accompanied by challenging unit economics due to the product cube, material handling and storage characteristics. The shift towards ecommerce order profiles was exacerbating these challenges. Sedlak optimized distribution by focusing on various facets such as network design, facility layout, technology, material handling, packaging, and exception management metrics to improve product margins and reduce business returns.
- Sedlak has partnered with a global cosmetics and skincare company that manufactures products in North America for consumption internationally. This client partnered with Sedlak to develop a supply chain strategy that would provide the best overall model, based on distribution/logistics network cost, capacity, service level, and key business drivers. This initiative included a unique strategy to service the APAC customers.
This is just a small sampling of the strategic network projects that Sedlak is currently engaged in. What’s the next step in keeping your network optimized?
